British Equestrian Launches Major Research into the Equestrian Workforce

British Equestrian has appointed Hartpury University to lead a major national research project examining the people who keep Britain’s equestrian sector running.

Running through 2026 and into 2027, the project aims to build the most comprehensive picture yet of the UK equestrian workforce — from yard staff, grooms and coaches to business owners, freelancers, self-employed professionals and volunteers.

The research will look at who works and volunteers within the sector, the roles they undertake, their qualifications and skills, and the challenges they face around recruitment, retention, training, career progression, inclusion, wellbeing and workforce sustainability.

The findings will be used to help identify skills and training needs, improve understanding of career pathways and support the development of a more sustainable equestrian workforce.

Have your say

The first stage of the project is now underway, with two national surveys asking people across the equestrian workforce to share their experiences.

Whether you employ people, work for yourself, freelance, work in a yard or volunteer within the industry, your experience can help build a more accurate picture of the sector.

Responses are anonymous and will contribute to a national evidence base intended to inform future workforce development, training, support and career opportunities.

There are separate surveys depending on whether your main role is paid or voluntary:

Paid workforce: Complete the workforce survey →

Volunteers: Complete the volunteer survey →

As an added incentive, participants can enter a prize draw to win one of five £50 LeMieux vouchers.

Both surveys close on 31 October 2026.

With the equestrian industry relying on a diverse workforce of employees, business owners, self-employed professionals and volunteers, the research provides an opportunity to ensure their experiences and challenges are properly understood.

If you work or volunteer within the equestrian sector, take a few minutes to contribute to the research and help shape the future of the industry.
